Did you know that Feb. 8 is recognized as the International Day of Prayer and Awareness against Human Trafficking? According to the United States Department of Homeland Security, "Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and involves the use of force, fraud or coercion to obtain some type of labor or commercial sex act." It is estimated that people around the world who are trapped in some form of slavery number 28.9 million (source: Catholic Herald).

Pope Francis tells us, "Human trafficking is a crime against humanity. We must unite our efforts to free the victims and stop this increasingly aggressive crime which threatens not only individuals but the basic values of society."

Tara Hughes, trafficking services coordinator at the International Institute of Buffalo, is in the kitchen with "Our Daily Bread" host Father Paul D. Seil to help us better understand this topic. The Human Trafficking Victim Services program provides assistance to victims in the eight counties in Western New York.
