When the idea of creating a senior apartment complex was first introduced several years ago on the Brothers of Mercy Campus in Clarence, planners quickly recognized that Western New Yorkers were looking for something different. Rather than just a place to live, they wanted a feeling of community. That led to the building of the Montabaur Heights Apartments.

"We tried - and I think succeeded - in focusing on many important aspects before a shovel ever hit the soil," said Peter Eimer, chief operating officer. "We took our time and asked many questions to ensure that we had a design that drew people together and encouraged interaction yet still addressed the need for privacy and solitude."

The more than 100 one- and two-bedroom apartment building offers a movie theatre, café/bistro, beauty/barber shop, gift store, fitness center,  grand dining room where meals (included in the rent) are served restaurant style, and of course, a chapel.
"We also recognized that our residents were active members of the community and would want to continue those relationships," Eimer said, "so we included a convenient community van and valet parking.

"Residents come and go during the day and then get together for chef-prepared meals in the dining room with the huge stone fireplace or enjoy cooking for friends and neighbors in their own spacious kitchens," he said. "We planned the apartments to reflect a feeling of comfort and luxury with high-end touches."

The first residents moved in during early January and the first of three floors quickly filled. The second and third floors are also populating rapidly. Every apartment features a private balcony and amenities that are usually found in more expensive housing.

"Another important consideration in our planning was making sure that Montabaur Heights offered something special - preferred admission to the widely-recognized health care facilities on the spacious country campus, including the five-star CMS rated Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center," Eimer said.
