This year Bishop Timon - St. Jude High School commemorates the 70th anniversary of its founding as Bishop Timon High School. To kick off the 70th anniversary commemoration, there will be a "Timon Turns 70" at Buffalo Riverfest Park on Sept. 10, 2016, from 5-9 p.m. Erik Bohen is serving as Event Chairperson.
In 1946 Bishop John O'Hara, Bishop of Buffalo, had the vision to provide an affordable Catholic education to boys living in the First Ward and South Buffalo. Bishop O'Hara named the new school in honor of the first Bishop of Buffalo, John Timon, and invited the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province to staff the school. The original friars sent by Holy Name Province were:
• Father Claude Kean, ofm, First Principal
• Father Eugene Shea, ofm
• Father Gerard McDonald, ofm
• Father Dennis McGurkin, ofm
• Father John Vogel, ofm
Father Kean arrived earlier in the summer of 1946 and, along with two other Friars, spent the summer going door to door in the First Ward recruiting students. For the past seven decades Franciscan priests and brothers have left an indelible imprint on the Timon community.
