Just as a standard calendar has seasons, 365 days and numerous celebrations, so too does a Liturgical Year calendar. In a Liturgical Year, the special seasons are Advent, Christmas, Lent, the Triduum, Easter and Ordinary Time.

In working for the diocese for many years now, I have come to learn, more deeply, many things regarding my Catholic faith. Masses celebrated during different seasons have special musical selections, specific readings and prayers. Even the colors of the priest's vestments have certain meanings, and are worn during different times of the Liturgical Year. Red vestments are worn on days to celebrate the passion of Jesus - Passion Sunday and Good Friday.

Red is also worn on Pentecost and for the sacrament of Confirmation to symbolize the color of fire. Priests will wear red vestments for feasts of the apostles and evangelists and for the celebration of martyrs.

On this month's "Our Daily Bread," host and pastor of St. Bernadette Parish in Orchard Park, Father Paul D. Seil, talks about the Liturgical Year, including Ordinary Time. On the menu is a five-cheese grilled cheese sandwich, mashed potatoes and shepherd's pie. Watch as Father Seil takes these classic, sometimes ordinary dishes and transforms them into the extraordinary.

So, mark your calendar and tune in to "Our Daily Bread" on Saturday, May 9, at 5:30 a.m. and noon on WKBW-TV Channel 7 to learn more about the Liturgical Year and Ordinary Time. And remember to check the website at for the day's recipe.
