The Brothers of Mercy Campus Foundation has announced the 2016 Caritas Awards honorees. They will be the guests of honor at the annual Brothers of Mercy Caritas Awards Dinner on May 12 at Salvatore's Italian Gardens on Transit Road, Depew.

The Patsy Casilio Humanitarian Award will be presented to the Bishop Richard J. Malone. The award is presented to an individual who demonstrates ongoing dedication to the service of others. Bishop Malone was ordained a priest in 1972 and was assigned an associate pastor at a church in Stoneham, Massachusetts.  During the next several years he served on the faculties of St. Clement High School, Xaverian Brothers High School, and St. John Seminary College. He also served as chaplain at Wellesley and Regis Colleges and, later, at the Harvard-Radcliff Catholic Student Center.

Bishop Malone served in the Archdiocese of Boston in several capacities before being appointed auxiliary bishop of Boston, South Region in 2000. He served as bishop of the Diocese of Portland, Maine, from 2004 to 2014. Bishop Malone was installed as the 14th bishop of Buffalo in 2012. He remained as Portland's bishop for 18 months after being installed in Buffalo. 

The 2016 Caritas Awards Not-for-Profit Honoree is Michael J. Maloney. Maloney was administrator of the Bristol Home in Buffalo and, later, as administrator of the Brothers of Mercy Sacred Heart Adult Home. In 1999 he became associate director of Canterbury Woods. In 2001 he was named executive director of The Greenfields. Six years later he became the first executive director of Fox Run. Maloney is a regional advocat for ALS, known as Lou Gehrig's Disease and actively participates in educational, fundraising, and public policy initiatives. His focus has been to bring attention to the disease and find treatment or a cure.

Russell J. Salvatore will be recognized as the 2016 Corporate Honoree. A remarkably busy and accomplished man, he has made many contributions to western New York's culture and community. 

Salvatore is the founder of Salvatore's Italian Gardens restaurant, the Garden Place Hotel, and, more recently, Russell's Steaks, Chops and More.  He also is responsible for the creation of the Patriots and Heroes Park, a two-acre oasis in Amherst where visitors are invited to reflect on several meaningful memorial sculptures.

Intensely devoted to the region, Salvatore has taken a leadership role in the development of numerous major endeavors including the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality at Trocaire College and projects with the Erie County Medical Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Women and Children's Hospital, and the SUNY Buffalo Medical Campus.

His philanthropic support has extended to many local nonprofit organizations including the Variety Club of Buffalo, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Buffalo Zoo, Heritage Learning Center, Lancaster/Depew Boys and Girls Club, Lancaster Police Department, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Food Bank of WNY, Kids Escaping Drugs, WNY Meals on Wheels, and the Brothers of Mercy Campus.
