Catholic Charities of Buffalo today reported the 2017 Appeal has reached 82 percent of goal, or $9,078,297.96 million in cash and pledges, a little more than three weeks after reaching 72 percent of the $11 million goal, or $7.89 million as of April 11. Typically at this time, three weeks after the annual Appeal Week campaign in local parishes throughout the Diocese of Buffalo, the Appeal is at between 87 and 91 percent of the final goal.

Catholic Charities of Buffalo celebrated the opening of its new Health Care Center on Buffalo's West Side with a dedication and blessing. As part of the official humanitarian agency of the Church, aid workers of Catholic Relief Services travel the globe to provide food, shelter, education and other needs to fellow human beings. One man whom CRS touched is Thomas Awiapo, formerly an orphaned child in Ghana, who credits the agency with changing his life and providing him with an education at a CRS-sponsored school after losing most of his family to starvation.

When Cheryl Calire unlocked the door to the former St. Adalbert rectory, she opened a new life for women and their babies. Through the Mother Teresa Home, she will offer a roof over the heads for homeless women who have chosen to raise their babies.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will close its store at 1919 Pine Ave., Niagara Falls, effective at the close of business, Saturday, Oct. 15. The store provides reconditioned clothing, household goods and small appliances at little or no cost to those in need.

"Caregivers: This Day is for You" is the theme of free day of workshops for caregivers set for Saturday, Nov. 5, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Millennium Airport Hotel, 2040 Walden Ave., Cheektowaga. In providing its services to the community, the Chemical Dependency Treatment Program of Catholic Charities' Monsignor Carr Institute in Buffalo is at the forefront of Western New York's fight against an ongoing epidemic of opioid addiction and related deaths. The center provides help for recovering patients, including counseling and Suboxone, a medication prescribed for associated symptoms.

The diocesan Department of Youth and Young Adult Ministry held its first-ever "Give Back," a large-scale outreach effort for young people to engage in community service in the name of the Catholic Church. The event, which took place Sept. 10 and allowed dozens of volunteers to help out at a total of 11 service sites, was a success.

Continuing our series on the Works of Mercy in our diocese, this week we visit the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

In order to carry out the Jesuit tradition of serving the poor while also helping the organizations that serve them, volunteers of the Ignatian Volunteer Corps serve throughout the Diocese of Buffalo. The organization is a recent addition to Western New York, having expanded here in February. Jesuit priests found the group, which pairs semi-retired men and women with service groups, in 1995.

In 1990, a Sister of St. Joseph serving at St. Mary of Sorrows Parish on the East Side of Buffalo got the idea to start a residence for homeless women after noticing how many young women were wandering the neighborhood's streets. After seven years, Sister Mary Augusta Kaiser, SSJ started the Teaching and Restoring Youth program.

The director of the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Buffalo spoke about St. Vincent's Door, a fund the local society is creating with the goal of helping women and children who are now in transition and need help after surviving domestic violence or other hardships.

Catholic and Episcopal parishes have followed the example of their shepherds by joining forces to help the needy. Now, a family of Somali refugees will have a home in Buffalo, thanks to the work of the two congregations.
