BUFFALO - Less than one month after Appeal Week 2015 ended and less than two weeks after announcing this year's campaign surpassed $9.5 million, Catholic Charities of Buffalo today announced another milestone, reporting the organization has raised $10,096,782.40 in cash and pledges, representing 93 percent of the goal. As a result, volunteers for the annual Appeal must raise $900,000 more to reach this year's $10.9 million goal.

BALTIMORE, MD - Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is launching a major relief effort in response to the devastating earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday, April 24. A CRS team is on the ground in Kathmandu, the capital city and one of the most affected areas, and our local partner Caritas Nepal has started distributing food and shelter.

LACKAWANNA, NY (April 21, 2015) - Bishop Richard J. Malone joined Baker Victory Services (BVS) President Msgr. Paul J.E. Burkard and Chief Executive Officer Terese M. Scofidio to break ground and officially begin construction on a new $16 million residential treatment facility on the BVS Martin Road Campus in Lackawanna. The latest development in the continuing evolution of programs begun by Father Nelson Baker, the new state-of-the-art facility is designed to replace cottages that were built in the 1950's and 60's, currently home to residents in the BVS RTF programs.

At the close of Appeal Week 2015, Catholic Charities announced March 31, that 78.4 percent of their goal has been met. Donations will be accepted until the close of the fiscal year June 30. This year's goal is $10.9 million.

Catholic Charities and Temple Beth Zion have joined in a collaborative effort to open a new food pantry to serve Getzville and Williamsville residents. Bishop Richard J. Malone announced Tuesday Catholic Charities' 91st annual Appeal has raised $7,432,587.16 to date, representing 68 percent of the $10.9 million goal. The total includes monies collected and reported by parish volunteers during the opening weekend (March 21-22) of Appeal Week 2015, the period which marks the strongest push for parish donations. The total reported is more than $500,000 short of where Catholic Charities' officials and the Appeal leadership team hoped to be after the first Sunday.

Parish outreach programs provide needed assistance, companionship and, most importantly, listening ears to offer support and a warm sense of community. Catholic Charities of Buffalo has announced several appointments to its leadership team in advance of the 2015 Appeal. The appointments were announced by the Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo, and Sister Mary McCarrick, OSF, diocesan director of Catholic Charities of Buffalo.

Catholic Charities of Buffalo's Immigration and Refugee Assistance Program recently received two grants totaling $200,000 to develop a Hospitality and Tourism Training Institute (HTTI), in partnership with Niagara University's (NU) College of Hospitality and Tourism Management Program.

Vive, the Buffalo-based organization whose primary mission is to assist those seeking asylum in Canada and the United States, will host a recognition dinner for its supporters on Feb. 24 at Salvatore's Italian Gardens in Depew. The dinner will be held at 6 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

Catholic Charities and Bishop Richard J. Malone have officially begun Catholic Charities' 2015 appeal, with a $10.9 million goal and a theme of "Find Good Within." The announcement was made at a press conference Jan. 7 at Catholic Charities' A Gathering Place, an outreach program for seniors. The appeal funds 70 programs Catholic Charities runs in 61 sites throughout the eight counties of the diocese.

A diocesan deacon became a Catholic Relief Services Global Fellow in October. He will be a representative of, and spokesperson for, the work of the Catholic Church's official international humanitarian aid organization which helps less fortunate people in countries around the world.

The sister of a diocesan priest and an incoming college student will travel to West Africa in November to assist the Marian Sisters of Eucharistic Love to serve children at an orphanage in Ghana. Under the careful guidance of Sister Stan Terese Mario Mumuni, MASEL, a native of Africa who has been a missionary for over 16 years, they will help children who would not otherwise have had a chance at life.

For the third year, a parishioner of St. Martin of Tours Parish in Buffalo continues to serve as a missionary in the Yukon Territory of Canada.

After this year's Catholic Charities Appeal exceeded its goal by nearly $200,000, the social service organization was able to open a new location in Franklinville last week to help serve several communities in Southeast Wyoming and Northern Cattaraugus counties.

After more than 20 years as a diocesan-wide event, the service program known as Young Christians at Work has moved to a parish-based version. However, the focus and lessons, remain the same.

This is the 90th annual appeal week for Catholic Charities which celebrates the support of Western New Yorkers who have made contributions to the appeal, and encourages those who have not already donated to do so.

Three Sisters of Mercy from the diocese knew their visit to the Philippines would be anything but routine after Super Typhoon Haiyan battered the central islands of the area with 160 mile per hour winds and walls of seawater last November.

Refugee experiences shown on the nightly news may be painful, yet distant. Refugees arrive in Western New York legally, approved by the Department of State and supported by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
