A $10.8 million goal, "Heart at Work" theme and a Harley-Davidson are at the center of this year's Catholic Charities Appeal, which was announced at a news conference in their Kenmore-Tonawanda office Friday morning.
Vision of home for asylum seekers is realized at Peace House

On the outside, Buffalo Peace House is a cozy brick building on the lawn of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Athol Springs. On the inside, a community of international refugees and Western New Yorkers is coming to quiet life. Speaking directly to Pope Francis's call to host refugees in unused parish buildings, Father Ross Syracuse, pastor, and the social outreach group from St. Francis Parish welcomed Peace House in their former convent building.
St. Luke's breaks ground on homes for mothers and children

St. Luke's Mission of Mercy, which has tended to the corporal works of mercy for nearly 20 years, will expand its ministry by creating a gated community for at-risk mothers and children. The first house in Gospa Village is expected to open this spring. The neighborhood will allow mothers and their children to live together with a missionary volunteer, who will serve as a nanny and aid, to allow the mother to work or go to school. A community center will be available for classes on basic home economics and parenting.
Conference looks to provide support and compassion to suicide survivors

All Souls Day, and the Fifteenth International Survivors of Suicide Day scheduled in Buffalo for Nov. 23, are reminders of a recent letter that appeared in a newsletter of the Association of Marian Helpers. The author lives in Buffalo and regularly prays for holy souls.

BALTIMORE - Bishop Richard J. Malone was elected chairman-elect of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth at the Fall General Assembly on Nov. 12. He was also re-elected to the board of Catholic Relief Services.

Catholic Charities appeal reaches 70 percent of $10.6 million goal

Volunteers and supporters gathered today with Bishop Edward U. Kmiec, bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, and the Catholic Charities of Buffalo Appeal leadership team to hear the progress of the Appeal to date and celebrate Appeal Week 2012. At the same time, Catholic Charities officials surprised Bishop Kmiec by announcing the re-naming of the former South Buffalo Food Pantry and Outreach, the site of the morning event, in honor of the bishop.
