Different circumstances lead priests to their vocation. Father Mark Itua, temporary parochial vicar at Queen of Martyrs Parish in Cheektowaga, came to the Diocese of Buffalo about seven months ago based on a friend's recommendation, which is not unusual. Unlike most other priests in the area, he was born and raised in Nigeria and came to the United States as an adult after being ordained.

The tragic and mistaken Supreme Court decision to redefine marriage legally to include so-called "same-sex marriage" has many negative consequences. Among those consequences, one of the most alarming, in my judgment, is the threat this ruling poses to the religious freedom of people of faith and faith-based institutions that honor marriage as God has created it to be, the union of one man and one woman, open to the birth and rearing of children.

The annual Pulaski Day Parade is one of local Polonia's most celebrated days on the calendar. Organizors are happy with this year's parade, set for Sunday, as it features special guest of honor Loretta Swit, star of TV's "M*A*S*H*" and an American stage and television actress of Polish descent. Bishop Edward M. Grosz of the Diocese of Buffalo will bless the parade at 1:15 p.m. in the Thruway Plaza parking lot in Cheektowaga, and also serve as an honorary grand marshal.

At 7 p.m., on Friday, July 17, the parish is hosting its Chowder Chase annual 5K Run/3K Walk, There will be an outdoor Mass at 6 p.m., Saturday, July 18, and the 166th annual parish picnic from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., Sunday, July 19.

From his earliest days, Father Dawid Krzeszowski had much in common with one of the newest saints of the Catholic Church. Now parochial vicar of St. John the Baptist in Kenmore, Father Krzeszowski was born in Poland near the birthplace of St. John Paul II. Today, he continues to share his faith and his heritage with many American parishioners.
