Sister Mary Virginis Kozlowski, a Felician Sister, educator and musician, died Aug. 21, 2015, in Blessed Mary Angela Care Center in Buffalo, at age 102.

The former Sophie Kozlowski was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Syracuse, to Walter and Michaeline (Lewandowski) Kozlowski. She joined the Felician Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Province in Buffalo and professed perpetual vows in 1939.

Sister Mary Virginis received a bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers' College, now Medaille College in Buffalo, and a diploma to teach piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, part of the University of Toronto, Canada.

Sister Mary Virginis began her teaching ministry at several schools in the Diocese of Syracuse, after which she taught the Slovak language, music and religious education classes in Canada and serving in music ministry as an organist. Sister Mary Virginis served in Ontario parishes for 17 years.

In 1958, she returned to Buffalo, where she taught at diocesan elementary schools before returning to Syracuse, where she served as a music instructor at Sacred Heart High School. She also served in the same capacity at Bishop Colton High School in Buffalo.

In 1964, Sister Mary Virginis began serving as a music instructor at the Institute of Music in Buffalo until 1967, returning in 1971 until the school closed in 2008. While teaching at the Institute of Music, she simultaneously served as an assistant organist at Villa Maria Convent in Buffalo, beginning in 1975. From 2004-06, she served as the convent's main organist. She entered the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center in 2010.

A funeral Mass was held in the chapel of Immaculate Heart of Mary (Villa Maria) Convent in Buffalo, after which Sister Mary Virginis was buried in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga.
