Father Eugene A. Zimpfer died Jan. 9, 2015, in Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx, age 82.
Father Zimpfer was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Buffalo, to Charles and Cecilia (Burchalewska) Zimpfer. After attending Canisius High School in Buffalo, he went to the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1953.
He joined the Jesuits in 1954 and studied philosophy at Loyola Seminary in Shrub Oak from 1954-1956. He taught at Loyola School in New York City and McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester.
In 1962, he began studying theology at Woodstock College in Maryland. He was ordained in 1965, received a licentiate in Sacred Theology from Woodstock College in 1966 and made his final vows in 1968.
He returned to McQuaid from 1967-1975, before becoming principal of St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, N.J., from 1976-1980. Father Zimpfer was principal of McQuaid from 1980-1986.
From 1986-1993, he served at Canisius College, and at Canisius High School from 1993 until his 2012 retirement.
He is survived by a cousin, Carol Ingram of Florida.
A Mass was held in the chapel of Murray-Weigel Hall, with burial in the Jesuit cemetery in Auriesville.
