Deacon Robert J. Moses, a permanent deacon, died Jan. 17, 2017. He was 83 years of age.
He was born Feb. 27, 1933, in Olean, to James and Anna (Eaton) Moses. He graduated from Eldred High School in Pennsylvania in 1951 and attended St. Bonaventure University, also receiving a certificate of junior accounting from McMaster-Paine Business College in San Francisco.
Deacon Moses attended banking school at the University of Wisconsin for three years. For 31 years, he worked for Fleet Bank in various capacities, with his last job being that of an auditor.
On Oct. 17, 1982, Deacon Moses was ordained to the permanent diaconate, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo, by Bishop Edward D. Head. He served in pastoral care at Buffalo General Hospital, bringing the Eucharist to patients and serving in the mental health building with a team of Eucharistic ministers.
Deacon Moses was an honorary life member, third- and fourth-degree, of the Knights of Columbus Council 2220 in Hamburg, and a treasurer and director of the Columbus Club of Hamburg. In 2002, the Autumn View Health Care Facility in Hamburg named him Volunteer of the Year.
He is survived by siblings Drexel (Ginny), Thomas (Mary Lou), Margaret (Leigh Newkirk) and Harland (Terry) Moses; as well as nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was held at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Hamburg.
