Sister Susanne Humpe, OSF, died March 15, 2017, at the Sisters of St. Francis' health center in Stella Niagara.
The former Ruth Humpe was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Henry and Hedwig (Krisch) Humpe. She joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara in 1944 and professed perpetual vows in 1949.
Sister Susanne received a bachelor's degree from Ohio Dominican College in Columbus in 1974 and held a multi-media certificate from Ohio State University.
Early in her ministry, Sister Susanne taught at St. Benedict School in Eggertsville, Stella Niagara Elementary School, St. Anthony Hall in Warsaw, St. Lawrence in Buffalo, and St. Peter in Lewiston. From 1982-86, she served as an art teacher at Stella Niagara Education Park. From 1986-95, she created work as a freelance artist for the Stella Niagara Art Studio and China Shop.
Outside of the Diocese of Buffalo, she also served at various schools in Ohio, New Jersey, South Carolina and West Virginia. In the Diocese of Columbus, she also served as a housemother at St. Vincent Orphanage, a librarian and director of a media center at various schools and a hospital, and an artist. She retired to Columbus in 1995 and became a resident of the Stella Niagara Health Center in May 2016.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was held in the sisters' chapel in Stella Niagara, after which she was buried in a family plot at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Steubenville.
