Sister Mary Kathleen Duggan, GNSH, died Nov. 15, 2016, at the Lafayette Redeemer nursing facility in Philadelphia, at 90 years of age.

She was born Aug. 15, 1926, in North Tonawanda, to John and Marguerita (Frisbee) Duggan. She graduated from D'Youville College in Buffalo with a bachelor's degree in English, and taught English and Latin for two years at Holy Angels Academy before joining the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in 1949. Sister Mary Kathleen later received a master's degree and a Ph.D., both in English language and literature, from St. Louis University in Missouri.

In 1973, Sister Mary Kathleen returned to Holy Angels Academy to serve as a teacher, later becoming the school's assistant principal in 1981. In 1983, she was promoted to principal, a position she held for 12 years. During the 1950s, '60s and '70s, she also taught at D'Youville College, serving as a professor of English from 1962-73.

She served as assistant superior general for the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart from 1975-79. In 1996, Sister Mary Kathleen began serving as an archivist at D'Youville College, where she remained until 2007. For 10 years, she served at Melrose Academy in Philadelphia, including a total of three years as its principal.

She is survived by a sister, Sister Margaret Mary Duggan, SSMN, and her siblings' families.

A memorial Mass was held at the Provincialate of the Holy Redeemer Sisters in Huntingdon Valley, Pa., with burial in Resurrection Cemetery, also in Pennsylvania.
