Father Joseph C. Carlo, a retired diocesan priest, died Jan. 25, 2017, in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 79.
A native of Niagara Falls, he was born Jan. 5, 1938, to Joseph F. and Lucy H. (Paduano) Carlo. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School and received a bachelor's and master's degree from Niagara University before attending Diocesan Preparatory Seminary in Buffalo, Our Lady of the Angels Seminary at Niagara University and St. John Vianney Seminary, now Christ the King Seminary, in East Aurora.
Father Carlo was ordained in 1963 at St. Joseph New Cathedral in Buffalo. That year, he began serving in a missionary apostolate at St. Joseph Parish in Bliss. From 1963-73, he served as associate pastor at Our Lady of the Rosary in Niagara Falls and St. Bartholomew in Buffalo.
In 1973, he was named assistant pastor at Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Blasdell, and from 1974-80, he served in the same capacity at St. Amelia Parish in Tonawanda.
Father Carlo became pastor of Our Lady of Victory in Frewsburg in 1980, where he remained until 1987, when he was named pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Albion.
In 1990, Father Carlo began serving as administrator of St. Charles in Niagara Falls, later serving as the parish pastor from 1992-98. He was pastor of St. Mary in Pavilion from 1998-2001.
Father Carlo returned to St. Amelia in 2001 to serve as a part-time senior parochial vicar until his retirement in September 2003. From 2009-15, he served as a temporary administrator of St. Michael in Warsaw, SS. Joachim and Anne in Attica and St. Teresa of Avila in Akron.
He was also a personnel board member and co-spiritual moderator of the Region 26 Council of Catholic Women.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Church, St. Joseph worship site, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls. Bishop Richard Malone will be the principal celebrant. There will be no prior visitation. Father Carlo will be buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Lewiston.
