Sister Anne Marie Gastle, GNSH, died Sept. 22, 2017, at the Grey Nuns' St. Joseph's Manor in Meadowbrook, Pa. She was 93.
The former Mary Geraldine Gastle was born April 30, 1924, in Buffalo, to Joseph H. and Lauretta Catherine (McManus) Gastle. She graduated from Holy Angels Academy in Buffalo in 1941 and joined the Grey Nuns in 1942. She received a bachelor's degree in English from D'Youville College in Buffalo and an MFA from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., with a minor in religion.
Early in her ministry, she taught for one year at Immaculate Conception School in Eden. She briefly taught outside of the diocese in Jackson Heights and Corona, both in Queens, as well as in Ogdensburg and Mahanoy City, Pa. In 1964, she joined the faculty of Holy Angels Academy until her 2001 retirement.
That year, she retired to the Grey Nuns' motherhouse in Yardley, Pa., where she served as a driver for other sisters in need of transportation. She moved to St. Joseph Manor in 2013.
Sister Anne Marie was a member of the Catholic Fine Arts Society, St. Luke's Art Guild, the Diocesan Art Teachers Association and the International Society of Art Through Education.
She is survived by a sister, Sally Anne Sheehan of Fresno, Calif., and two nieces.
A funeral Mass was held in the Holy Redeemer Sisters Chapel in Huntingdon Valley, Pa.
