Sister Mary Christine Songin, FSSJ, died Oct. 26, 2017, at Father Baker Manor in Orchard Park. She was 95.
The former Catherine Songin was born May 13, 1922, Buffalo, to Waclaw and Louise (Harasimowicz) Songin. She became a postulant of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in 1940 and professed final vows in 1945.
Sister Christine received a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College in Detroit and a master's degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. Later in her life, she received a nursing degree from the Felician College in Lodi, N.J.
Sister Christine served as a teacher and nurse for 42 years of her ministry. She taught at Immaculata Academy and Hilbert College, both in Hamburg, as well as at schools in Detroit and Shamokin, Pa. She was a nurse at St. Joseph Intercommunity Hospital in Cheektowaga, St. Anthony's Home in Hamburg and her order's Immaculate Conception Convent. She became a patient in the care community in 2015.
She survived by a sister, Margaret; two sisters-in-law, Stella and Marcia, and her siblings' families.
A funeral Mass was held at Immaculate Conception Convent, with burial in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga.
