Sister Alma Robert Glenn, 1931-2018

Teacher and missionary, Sister Alma Robert Glenn died April 12, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, Allegany. She was 86.

Born Madeline Alma Glenn on May 25, 1931 in the Bronx, the daughter of Robert and Alma Frohner Glenn attended Our Lady of Solace and Holy Cross Grade Schools before graduating from Mother Cabrini High School in Washington Heights in 1950.  After graduation, she attended St. Elizabeth Teacher College (now part of St. Bonaventure University) near Allegany, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education.

Sister Alma was received into the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse on Aug. 15, 1951, and professed her final religious vows seven years later.  

She began her ministry teaching in congregational schools in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Sister requested to be a missionary to Jamaica and served as principal at Alvernia Prep in Kingston from1962 to 1993. Following her many years in education, Sister Alma assisted in secretarial work at St. Francis Barry Hospital in Miami Shores, Florida.  She returned to St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in 1995 to assist with medical billing and care for the chapel as sacristan.  In 2010, she officially retired and happily volunteered wherever she was needed, especially in the archives. Sister was gifted with many talents and among them were knitting and crocheting.  For years, she made lap robes for patients and hats for newborn infants at Olean General Hospital.

Sister Alma is predeceased by her parents and brothers, Robert and John.  

A funeral Mass was held April 16 in the chapel of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, followed by burial in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
