Former teacher and principal, Sister Rita Kane died June 22, 2018, at the age of 100.

Born Dec. 3, 1917 in Buffalo, Sister Rita joined the Sisters of St. Joseph in February 1937, taking the name Sister John Aloysius. She professed her final vows in August 1942, after earning a bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College, now Medaille College in Buffalo. She followed up her education by earning a certificate from the Visually Handicapped Institute of Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and a master's degree from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College.

For 16 years she taught elementary grades. From 1963-1968, she directed postulants for her community. She also served on the diocesan Vocation Team. She served as principal of Cathedral School in Buffalo from 1971 to 1985.

In 1987, she became active with the alumnae of Mount St. Joseph Academy. The group raised funds for the Sisters of St. Joseph.

A funeral Mass was held June 25, followed by burial at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence in Clarence.
