Educator and pastoral minister Sister Mary Norbert Stang died on June 25, 2019, in the Health Care Center at Fredonia Place of Williamsville.
Born in Boston, N.Y. on May 11, 1925, Sister Norbert, the former Agnes Stang, entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Francis on Aug. 2, 1945.
Sister Norbert graduated from Canisius College in Buffalo with a bachelor's degree in June 1960. In 1964, she received a master's degree in Chemistry from Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind. Later in life, Sister Norbert also achieved various certificates including a certification for the National Association of Catholic Chaplains through the United States Catholic Conference.
Sister Norbert began her teaching career at St. Francis of Assisi, Visitation, St. James and St. Bartholomew Schools in Buffalo, St. Christopher, Tonawanda; St. Leo the Great, Amherst; and Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Harris Hill. Other assignments included teaching on the secondary level at Bishop O'Hern, Archbishop Carroll high schools, formerly in Buffalo, and St. Mary's High School in Lancaster.
Following 26 years in education, Sister Mary Norbert began a career in health care serving in the role of pastoral ministry for 10 years at St. Francis Hospital, Buffalo, and Mercy Health & Rehab Center in Auburn. Sister Norbert completed her ministry in service to the community at St. Mary of the Angels.
Sister Mary Norbert is survived by her brother Sylvester and her sister Bea.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary of the Angels Chapel, 201 Reist St., Williamsville on Wednesday, July 3 at 10:30 a.m. Interment is in Gethsemane Cemetery.
