Buffalo's Bishop Richard J. Malone will dedicate and bless the Mother Teresa Home on Thursday, Aug. 25, the eve of Mother Teresa's birthday. Located at the former St. Adalbert Church rectory, 208 Stanislaus St., Buffalo, the home will serve as a temporary residence for homeless, pregnant women and young mothers while transitioning back into the world.

Home is where Cheryl Calire's heart is. After a year of cleaning, carpentry and more cleaning, she will open the Mother Teresa Home, a place for women who have chosen life to live. The ribbon-cutting and dedication will take place Thursday, Aug. 25, with Bishop Richard J. Malone blessing the house.

The first-ever "Burgers, Brews and Blues" event hosted by the Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities was a sold-out success, drawing a crowd of 150 people to help raise money for the Williamsville Franciscan community Tuesday evening.

In 1990, a Sister of St. Joseph serving at St. Mary of Sorrows Parish on the East Side of Buffalo got the idea to start a residence for homeless women after noticing how many young women were wandering the neighborhood's streets. After seven years, Sister Mary Augusta Kaiser, SSJ started the Teaching and Restoring Youth program.

A weekend filled with live music, classic cars, numerous raffles and delicious food offerings will highlight the 79th annual summer picnic at the Church of the Annunciation, 7580 Clinton St., Elma. The event kicks off on Friday, Aug. 19, and concludes with a grand drawing the evening of Sunday, Aug. 21.

EAST AURORA — Christ the King Seminary will offer a new course, Ministry Essentials: Introductions to Catholic Teachings, this fall. The course will offer foundational information on Catholic teachings, including essential themes, history and vocabulary for faith formation and other parish ministries. Dennis Mahaney, M.Div., director of evangelization and parish life for the diocese, will serve as the primary instructor for the class, along with seminary faculty and guest lecturers.

A tradition dating back almost a century will come to an end in early August, when the final campers spend a week at the St. Vincent de Paul Summer Camp on the shores of Lake Erie in Angola.

WILLIAMSVILLE — The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities will host their inaugural "Burgers, Brews and Blues" summer fundraiser on Tuesday, Aug. 16, at St. Mary of the Angels at 201 Reist St. Event proceeds will benefit the sisters' important ministries throughout Western New York and beyond.

Bishop Richard J. Malone has appointed Father Robert W. Zilliox Jr. pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Bowmansville, for a term of six years. In his new role, which began August 1, he takes over for Father Joseph Klos who retired in May. Father Zilliox will continue to serve as judge and defender of the bond in the Tribunal of the Diocese of Buffalo, a position he has held since 2013.

Catholic Academy of West Buffalo will receive 40 gallons of paint to refresh its learning environment. Catholic Academy was selected as the winner of a paint grant through Dibble True Value's partnership with True Value Foundation's "Painting a Brighter Future" program. The grant helps to renew an atmosphere that sets a positive tone for educators to teach and children to learn.

Throughout the long history of our diocese, we have been served by hundreds and hundreds of dedicated priests. Today, there are 128 retired diocesan priests incurring the cost of living either on their own or the cost of living in one of our diocesan retirement homes.

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops offers some thoughts on Faithful Witness to Marriage

WASHINGTON, DC (CNA) - Although both major 2016 vice presidential nominees were raised Catholic and still profess to be Christians, their public policy records have drawn concern from some members of the faithful.

SYRACUSE - The Sisters of St. Francis of the Neumann Communities (SOSF) with sisters in Syracuse, Williamsville, Poughkeepsie and Mount Vernon, New York, joined more than 5000 Catholic sisters in asking the U.S. presidential candidates to stop using language "that disrespects, dehumanizes or demonizes" others during the presidential campaign.

Msgr. Paul Juenker, a retired diocesan priest who now lives at the O'Hara Residence in Tonawanda, spoke about the services the diocese provides to its retired clergy, which the priests' retirement fund would benefit.

Msgr. James Connelly's grandmother planted the idea of becoming a priest during his first Communion. A speaker at Bennett High School in Buffalo cultivated it. A priest mentioned how an ordinary student could become a priest if God was calling him. That priest, Father Michael Gallagher, assisted Msgr. Connelly many years later at his first Mass after ordination.

The Buffalo Mass Mob is heading to St. Margaret's Church on Sunday, August 7, 2016 for 9:30 a.m. Mass. This is the 17th Mass Mob the group has staged since it was founded in 2013 to help struggling inner city churches fill their pews.

ZAKOPANE, POLAND - Bishop Richard J. Malone once again met up with diocesan pilgrims who flew to Poland for World Youth Day. Although much of the bishop's time in Poland was spent at catechesis sessions for other dioceses, he managed to meet up with pilgrims from Buffalo on several occasions.

KRAKOW, POLAND - As the sun rose over Krakow's Field of Mercy, over 2 million people woke up in anticipation of Mass with Pope Francis. The current pontiff, following in the footsteps of his predecessors St. John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, celebrated Sunday Mass on the closing day of World Youth Day.

At St. Pius X Parish in Getzville, members of the parish community came together to celebrate the Year of Mercy, as Pope Francis declared, and to recognize the mercy of God through the recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, presentations from parish leaders, inspirational videos and testimonials of parishioners who felt they have been touched by, or witnessed firsthand, the role of divine mercy in their lives.

The Diocese of Buffalo will hold its first-ever collection intended specifically for the benefit of retired diocesan priests on the weekend of Aug. 6 to Aug. 7. One of these priests, Msgr. Dino Lorenzetti, currently lives at the O'Hara Residence behind Cardinal O'Hara High School in Tonawanda.

Many of us are familiar with arranging for the care of an aging parent. As sons and daughters, it's the right thing to do. We should consider it a similar responsibility to provide health care for our aging diocesan priests.

Msgr. Anthony J. Caligiuri, a retired diocesan priest and former Director of Communications for the Diocese of Buffalo, died July 27 in Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarence. He was 92.
