Father John P. Bucki, SJ, a familiar face among alumni, faculty and staff of Canisius College in Buffalo, died Sept. 2, 2017, at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, following a long battle with cancer. He was 67.

Sister Mary Anthony Garnier, OSP, of the Oblate Sisters of Providence, died July 20, 2017, at 101 years of age.

Sister Mary Angeline (Donald) Bierut, CSSF, died Aug. 8, 2017, in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center in Buffalo. She was 96.

Brother Louis N. Mauro, SJ, died July 28, 2017, at Murray-Weigel Hall in the Bronx. He was 75.

Sister Virginia May, OSF, died July 30, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She was 91.

Father Robert J. McArtney, a retired diocesan priest, died July 23, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo. He was 83 years old.

Father Ronald W. Sams, pastor emeritus of St. Michael Parish in Buffalo, died June 27, 2017, in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 88.

Father Vincent Cooke, SJ, the 23rd president of Canisius College from 1993-2010 who transformed the small college into a prestigious institution and expanded it with new buildings and academic programs, died June 22, 2017, in Murray-Weigel Hall at Fordham University in New York City. He was 81.

William Mariani, Ed.D., D'Youville College's executive vice president, Administrative Affairs, died following a brief illness Sunday, June 25, at Gates Vascular Institute in Buffalo. He was 67.

Sister Carmela Correia, OSF, died June 17, 2017, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She was 98.

Sister M. Winifred Fox died June 6, 2017,in the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Clarence. She was 88.

Sister Joyce Martin Nalewajk, FSSJ, died June 5, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Convent in Hamburg. She was 88 years old.

Sister Susan Buckley, OSF, died May 31, 2017, at Buffalo General Hospital. She was 82.

Sister Teresa Marie Sweeney, OSF, of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, died May 11, 2017, in the Santa Casa Hospital, Anápolis, Goias, Brazil. She was 86.

Sister Frances Roberts, formerly known as Sister Mary Raymond, died March 26, 2017, at the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence in Clarence. She was 99 years old.

Father Raymond F. Uschold, a retired diocesan priest, died April 26, 2017, at Elderwood Skilled Nursing in Amherst. He was 87 years of age.

Father David J. Peter, a retired diocesan priest, died April 17, 2017, at the Brothers of Mercy facility in Clarence. He was 76 years of age.

Sister Mary Marcella Anne Wendzikowski, CSSF, died on Good Friday, April 14, 2017, in the Blessed Mary Angela Care Center of the Felician Sisters in Buffalo. She was 74.

Sister Alice Williams, SSJ, died March 27, 2017, in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Williamsville.

Msgr. Edward J. Sobierajski, a retired diocesan priest, died Feb. 25, 2017, in Sisters Hospital in Buffalo.

Sister Gertrude Fawls, OSF, formerly known as Sister Geraldine, died Feb. 24, 2017. She was 93.

Sister Faith McGahan, GNSH, formerly Sister David Martin, died at St. Joseph's Manor in Philadelphia on Feb. 20, 2017, after being diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor. She was 79.

Sister M. Concilia Flaherty, OSF, died Feb. 18, 2017, at age 96.

Sister Jean Vogel, GNSH, formerly known as Sister Stella Maris, died Feb. 10, 2017, in Philadelphia, at 91 years of age.

Sister Rose Mary Cauley, GNSH (Sister Mary de Montfort) died Feb. 3, 2017, at Holy Redeemer Hospital Hospice in Philadelphia. She was 81.

Sister Rosemary Anthony, formerly Sister Mary Augusta, died Feb. 11, 2017, at Mount St. Mary Hospital in Lewiston. She was 85.

Sister Marilyn Archer, OSF, died Feb. 8, 2017, at the Sister of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity's health center in Stella Niagara. She was 96.

Deacon Daniel H. Mackowiak, a permanent deacon at Infant of Prague Parish in Cheektowaga and a Niagara Catholic High School teacher, died Feb. 7, 2017, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, at age 65.

Father Joseph C. Carlo, a retired diocesan priest, died Jan. 25, 2017, in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 79.

Deacon Richard J. Mahaney, a permanent deacon, did Jan. 8, 2017. He was 91 years old.

Sister Maria Pares, OSF, a legend in Western New York women's basketball history, an inductee of multiple halls of fame, and a vocal opponent of misogyny in sports, died Jan. 20, 2017, at age 75, due to complications related to cancer. Throughout her years of service, Sister Maria was considered to be a strong and feisty coach on the court who also enjoyed helping young women excel on a personal level.

Father Robert Marino, pastor of St. Philomena Parish in Franklinville, died Jan. 16, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, after a long illness. He was 61 years of age.
