Deacon Robert J. Moses, a permanent deacon, died Jan. 17, 2017. He was 83 years of age.

Father James A. Grimmer, a retired diocesan priest, died Jan. 9, 2017, at the Brothers of Mercy nursing facility in Clarence. He was 87 years of age.

Sister Joan Carroll died Nov. 26, 2016, in the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence in Clarence. She was 84.

After devoting most of her life to spreading God's word in schools and in her own books, Sister Ruth Penksa, a Grey Nun of the Sacred Heart, has died from injuries sustained in a fire. Sister Ruth was rescued on Dec. 20 from a fire in her high rise apartment on Hertel Avenue. She was rushed to the Erie County Medical Center suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. She remained in the Burn Treatment Unit of ECMC for more than a week before passing on the morning of Dec. 28. She was the only one seriously injured in the fire.

Sister Kathleen Kovacs, SSS, of the Sisters of Social Service, died Dec. 8, 2016, in the residence of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Clarence. She was 91.

Father Paul F. Stengel, a retired diocesan priest, died Dec. 14, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo. He was 84.

Sister Mary Jude Rindfuss, SSMN, died Dec. 4, 2016, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, at age 84.

Deacon Paul Francis Carmody, a permanent deacon, died Nov. 21, 2016, at age 75.

Father Charles Schneider, a Divine Word Father who served as a missionary in Ghana for much of his life and ministry, died Nov. 6, 2016, in Techny, Ill. He was 97 years of age.

Sister Mary Kathleen Duggan, GNSH, died Nov. 15, 2016, at the Lafayette Redeemer nursing facility in Philadelphia, at 90 years of age.

Sister Donna Butler, OSF, of the Sisters of St. Francis in Stella Niagara, died Nov. 3, 2016, at the Stella Niagara Health Center, at age 83.

Sister Mary Pauline Pasierb died Oct. 15, 2016, in Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. She was 84.

Sister Celia Kiesel, formerly Sister M. Conrad, died Oct. 9, 2016, in the Stella Niagara Health Center in Stella Niagara. She was 90

Sister Brigid Conboy, OSF, a missionary in Indonesia, died Sept. 28 in St. Elisabeth Hospital in Semarang, Indonesia. She was 94.

Father Thomas P. Taton, a retired diocesan priest, died Sept. 23, 2016, in Kenmore Mercy Hospital. He was 80 years of age.

Brother Nathanael Necaster, OFM, died Sept. 14, 2016, at Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. He was 86.

Sister Kathleen Francis Honc, OSF, died Sept. 9, 2016, in the St. Clare Community of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She was 85 years of age.

Sister Marie Celeste Sullivan, OSF, died Sept. 7, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She was 87 years old.

Sister Patricia Friel, OSF, died Sept. 3, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany. She was 82.

Sister Patricia Reen died Aug. 29, 2016, in Sisters Hospital in Buffalo, at 85 years of age.

Msgr. Anthony J. Caligiuri, a retired diocesan priest and former Director of Communications for the Diocese of Buffalo, died July 27 in Brothers of Mercy Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarence. He was 92.

Father Nicholas A. Rossello, a retired diocesan priest, died June 12, 2016, at Mercy House of the Southern Tier in Endicott, near Binghamton in Broome County. He was 86 years old.

Msgr. John I. Ducette, known for his longtime work with the Apostleship of the Sea, died April 12, 2016, just eight days before his 80th birthday.

Sister Henrietta Schwagler died March 28, 2016, at the Stella Niagara Health Center. She was 97.

Sister Sheila L. Lederer died March 20, 2016, at the Mercy Convent Center Health Care Unit in Buffalo. She was 80 years old.

Sister Sally Walz, formerly Sister William Marie, died March 25, 2016, at age 77.

Sister Angela Cools-Lartigue died March 18, 2016, at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. She was 86 years of age.

Sister Ancilla Marie Mecca died March 12, 2016, at St. Mary Center in Buffalo. She was 93.

Father Eugene Kole, OFM Conv., died March 3, 2016, at age 68.

Msgr. Joseph A. Boruszewski died March 9, 2016. He was 89 years old.

Father Francis J. Zmozynski died March 6, 2016, at Father Baker Manor in Orchard Park. He was 84.

Sister Mary Clement Schubert died Feb. 25, 2016, at the Sisters of St. Francis Health Center in Stella Niagara, at age 84.

Sister Mary Kathleen Murphy died Feb. 18, 2016, at Olean General Hospital. She was 98 years old.

Sister Rose Therese Shaw died Jan. 13, 2016, in the St. Clare Community of St. Elizabeth Motherhouse in Allegany, at age 88.

Diocesan priest Father Lawrence E. Burns, 79, died Feb. 5, 2016, at his home at the Bishop Head Residence in Lackawanna.

Msgr. George J. Brennan, a retired diocesan priest, died Jan. 31, 2016, at the age of 94.

Sister Theresa Marie Malloy, of the Missionary Sisters of St. Columban, died Jan. 22, 2016, at St. Columban's on the Lake Retirement Home in Silver Creek. She was 91 years of age.

Deacon Jimmie L. Boyd, a permanent deacon serving at Blessed Trinity Parish in Buffalo, died Jan. 20, 2016. He was 75 years old.

Sister Maria of the Rosary, of the Dominican Nuns of the Perpetual Rosary, died Dec. 31, 2015, in Buffalo. She was 98 years of age.

Msgr. John W. Zeitler died Jan. 11, 2016, at Buffalo General Hospital, at age 83.
